Towing Bracket

medium 19 models total

A towing bracket is the structural padeye welded into bow and stern that receives the towing pennant during an emergency tow; on tankers above 20,000 dwt it is part of a SOLAS-mandated arrangement that must be usable within minutes, not rigged from scratch.

Read more — Towing Bracket explained

What sets a towing bracket apart

A towing bracket is not a general-purpose padeye pressed into service for towing. It is a purpose-built structural fitting, calculated against the ship's design towing force and welded into doubler plates that spread the load into deck girders and shell framing rather than into a single deck plate. The distinction matters because an emergency tow can apply loads far above anything a mooring bitt or Panama lead was designed to absorb, and a fitting that looks similar but was never stressed for towing will tear out of the deck under load. On tankers the bracket is one element of the Emergency Towing Arrangement (ETA), a fitted, ready-to-use system rather than a piece of loose gear kept in a locker.

Main components

Bracket and padeye

A heavy fabricated bracket, usually a closed-eye or double-plate padeye, through-bolted or welded to reinforced deck structure at bow and stern. The pin diameter and plate thickness are sized from the calculated towing force, not from a standard mooring fitting table.

Fairlead

Guides the towing pennant from the bracket over the bow or stern without a sharp bend that would fatigue the wire or chain. Fairlead radius and roller diameter are matched to the pennant size.

Chain stopper

Takes the strain off the winch or bitts once the pennant is made fast, holding the load on the chain link rather than on rotating machinery.

Pick-up gear

A retrieval line, buoy, or messenger arrangement that lets the towing vessel's crew recover the pennant from a disabled ship without launching a boat, which is the entire point of a pre-rigged ETA in bad weather.

Sizing and selection

The bracket's design load is derived from the ship's deadweight using the formula in the SOLAS towing arrangement requirements, then increased by a safety factor before the bracket, fairlead, and chain stopper are each checked against it. Selection also depends on:

  • Deck layout at bow and stern, and whether existing structure can take a doubler without major steelwork.
  • Pennant material and diameter, since the fairlead and stopper must match it.
  • Corrosion allowance, because the bracket sits in one of the most exposed, spray-soaked positions on the ship.
  • Access for inspection without removing other deck fittings.

Regulations and class

SOLAS Chapter II-1 requires tankers of 20,000 dwt and above to carry a fitted emergency towing arrangement at both ends, capable of being deployed within 15 minutes in bad weather and within 1 hour in favourable conditions without help from the towing ship. Class societies survey the bracket and associated fittings as part of the periodic hull survey, checking weld condition, pin wear, and that the pick-up gear is still present and led correctly, since these arrangements are rarely used and easily neglected.

Typical faults

FaultConsequence
Corrosion at the bracket-to-deck weld, hidden under paintReduced load capacity that only shows up under actual towing load, by which point failure is sudden
Pick-up gear missing or perishedDeployment time far exceeds the SOLAS limit, forcing a boat launch in weather that may not allow it
Fairlead roller seizedPennant chafes against a fixed edge instead of running free, cutting through wire strands under load
Chain stopper never load-tested after installationStopper slips under real towing tension, transferring shock load to the winch brake

What to look for in a supplier

  • Design calculations referencing the actual ship's deadweight and the applicable SOLAS formula, not a generic catalogue bracket.
  • Weld procedure and NDT records for the bracket-to-hull connection, since this is a fatigue-loaded structural joint.
  • Class approval or a type approval certificate covering the complete ETA, not just the bracket in isolation.
  • Compatibility of fairlead and chain stopper dimensions with the pennant already carried on board.

During drills, actually run the pennant through the fairlead and onto the chain stopper rather than just confirming the bracket is there — a seized fairlead or a stopper that has never been worked is the failure that shows up first when the arrangement is needed for real.

Common Failures & Inspection Points
  • Corrosion, wastage or coating breakdown causes visible section loss and weakens the fitting or surrounding structure
  • Wear in pins, rollers, hinges or bearing surfaces causes excessive play, stiffness or poor line guidance
  • Seal or gasket deterioration on closing appliances causes water ingress or loss of weathertight integrity
  • Loose foundations, fasteners or cracked welds cause movement, vibration or visible structural defects
  • Blocked drains, vents or passages cause water accumulation, pressure problems or restricted operation
Service: Inspect structural attachment, corrosion, welds, fasteners, moving parts, seals and coatings. Verify free movement, drainage, closing and securing functions according to the fitting type. Pay particular attention to load-bearing foundations and watertight or weathertight boundaries. Refer to class, vessel and manufacturer documentation for the exact figure for loads, clearances and acceptance limits.
Spare Parts: Carry seals or gaskets, pins, bushes, rollers, approved fasteners, lubrication items and small operating hardware appropriate to the installed fitting.
Strengths
  • SOLAS‑compliant design accepted by most classification societies
  • Forward placement gives optimal angle for towing forces on loss of propulsion
  • Class‑approved welds and pins simplify installation on new builds or during retrofits
  • Simple mechanical operation – manual release pin can be exercised annually
Weaknesses
  • Weld cracks have been reported if not inspected at dry‑dock, requiring NDT verification
  • Pins are prone to seizure in high‑salinity or poorly maintained environments
  • Chafing plates wear over time and must be replaced periodically
  • Limited adjustability – fixed forward orientation may not suit vessels with unconventional bow layouts
Typical Vessels: TankerContainer shipBulk carrierGeneral cargo vesselOffshore supply vessel
Certifications: SOLAS
Decision Guide: Choose if the vessel requires a SOLAS‑approved forward emergency tow point, has an established maintenance programme (annual exercise, quarterly greasing, dry‑dock NDT), and operates in waters where rapid towing is critical. Avoid if the ship lacks regular access for weld inspection or operates in extremely corrosive environments without enhanced corrosion protection.
Use Cases: Mooring, deck access, cargo access, drainage, ventilation and general deck service.

Strengths
  • SOLAS compliant and class approved, meeting mandatory safety standards
  • Simple manual operation – no hydraulic or powered components required
  • Robust steel construction suitable for high‑impact loads
  • Easy visual inspection of pennant wire and stopper mechanism
  • Aft placement aligns directly with the vessel’s longitudinal axis for efficient towing
Weaknesses
  • Load rating may be lower than specialised high‑strength custom brackets
  • Pennant wire is prone to corrosion if not inspected and maintained annually
  • Manual stopper can seize under extreme load or if debris accumulates
  • Foundation stresses must be monitored; improper mounting can lead to bracket failure
Typical Vessels: Bulk CarrierContainer ShipGeneral Cargo VesselRo‑Ro FerryPassenger Ferry
Certifications: SOLAS
Decision Guide: Choose if: you need a cost‑effective, SOLAS‑compliant towing point on an aft deck and prefer simple manual operation with low maintenance. Avoid if: the vessel requires exceptionally high tow loads, has limited space for bracket foundation, or prefers powered/automated towing systems.
Use Cases: Mooring, deck access, cargo access, drainage, ventilation and general deck service.

Strengths
  • Class approved and SOLAS‑compliant for tanker applications
  • High rated load capacity suitable for large vessels (>20 000 DWT)
  • Standard quick‑release pin enables rapid connection of towlines
  • Designed for semi‑annual inspection with clear access to critical joints
Weaknesses
  • Historical reports of weld cracking at the deck attachment area
  • Pin corrosion can lead to seizure if maintenance is lax
