What sets an escort winch apart

Harbour and conventional towing winches are built to hold a static or slowly varying load while a tug pushes or pulls a berthed or manoeuvring ship. An escort winch has to do something harder: render wire out under controlled tension while the tug is actively steering or braking a moving tanker at speed, absorbing dynamic loads that spike well above the steady towline tension as the tug changes angle and the towed ship yaws. That duty demands a render-recover brake system that can pay out wire smoothly under high dynamic load without snatching, rather than a brake designed mainly to hold.

Main components

Winch drum and wire

Large-diameter drum carrying high-strength steel wire rope, sized for the escort tug's bollard pull rating and the towline length needed for the escort configuration.

Render-recover brake

A hydraulic or friction brake system set to release wire at a pre-set tension threshold, protecting the towline and winch structure from snap loads, then recovering slack once the load drops.

Hydraulic power unit

Drives the winch through hauling and rendering, sized to the tug's power train and matched to the render-recover response time needed.

Tension monitoring and control
