Common failures & inspection points
Measure insulation resistance between HV winding to ground and between windings (U-V, V-W, W-U, U-Earth, V-Earth, W-Earth) with megohmmeter (500V DC standard); measured value minimum 100x operating voltage; perform before commissioning
Winding temperature under load according to IEC 60076-2 (max. 98°C continuously at 30°C ambient, Class A paper-oil insulation); infrared scanning for hot spots at terminals; check terminal tightness after first week of operation
Visual inspection for salt crystal deposits, surface rust, pitting on fittings and joints; perform regular fresh water rinsing; check surface coating for blistering, flaking; inspect insulators for tracking patterns
After cleaning due to contamination, check for: rust spots on core steel laminations, carbonization traces or tracking on windings, discoloration indicating overtemperature or loose connections; cracks, chips or contamination on windings
Check for cracks, deformations, pressure marks; inspect bushing contamination and tracking traces; check protective enclosure sealing and cable ducts for moisture ingress
Check oil level, color and moisture content; verify dielectric strength by oil tests; perform dissolved gas analysis (DGA)
