Common issues
- Mechanical seal leakage from wear, dry running, or seal face damage
- Bearing wear or noise from misalignment, over-greasing or lubrication failure
- Impeller wear/erosion reducing delivered flow and head over time
- Cavitation from low suction pressure, a clogged strainer or an air leak on the suction side
- Coupling misalignment causing vibration and accelerated bearing/seal wear
- Increased internal (wear ring) clearance reducing efficiency without an obvious external fault
- Suction strainer fouling reducing flow and risking cavitation
Inspection checklist
- Check the mechanical seal for visible leakage or weeping
- Measure bearing housing temperature and vibration and compare to baseline
- Verify shaft-to-motor coupling alignment
- Inspect the suction strainer for blockage or damage
- Check discharge pressure and flow against the pump's rated curve
- Listen for cavitation noise at the suction side during operation
- Check foundation bolts and pump/motor base for looseness
- Verify motor current draw against the nameplate rating
- Check coupling guard is fitted and undamaged
Service intervals

Typical wear limits
| Wear ring radial clearance | typically a few tenths of a millimetre when new for this pump size; renew when clearance has roughly doubled - confirm against the pump's own clearance table |
| Overall bearing housing vibration | investigate and consider bearing renewal once trended vibration significantly exceeds the pump's own established baseline, rather than acting on a single generic figure |

Safety
- Rotating shaft and coupling must have the guard fitted before operation
- Cooling water may be warm - be alert to hot surfaces on the discharge side
- Isolate and lock out the motor electrically before opening the casing
- Pressurised discharge line - relieve pressure before disturbing seal or gland components
Class survey
Cooling water pumps supporting essential machinery are normally within the vessel's machinery survey scope; availability of a standby pump and correct valve line-up are commonly checked alongside pump condition.
