Common issues

• Mechanical seal or gland packing leakage

Inspection checklist

• Check and time the self-priming performance against expected values
• Inspect the suction strainer and bilge well for debris
• Check mechanical seal or packing for leakage
• Verify discharge pressure and flow against the pump's rated curve
• Check bearing temperature and vibration
• Verify remote start/stop and bilge level alarm function
• Check non-return valve operation on the suction line
• Inspect casing and impeller for wear, erosion or corrosion
• Confirm interface with any oily water separator or bilge alarm system is functioning

Bilge pumps are SOLAS-relevant essential machinery; class surveys typically verify an independent power source, self-priming capability, and that bilge pumping arrangements including any emergency bilge suction are demonstrated, along with correct bilge level alarm function.

Estimated lifetime: Bearings commonly achieve on the order of 20,000-30,000 running hours with correct lubrication; mechanical seals in bilge duty are typically shorter-lived, often 8,000-15,000 hours, given the abrasive and contaminated nature of the pumped media - both figures depend heavily on how clean the bilge is kept.
