Common issues
- Wear ring and impeller clearance opening up over time, reducing flow and head at rated speed
- Mechanical seal or gland packing leakage, particularly after long idle periods typical of ballast pumps
- Bearing wear or overheating from misalignment between pump and driver
- Cavitation damage (pitting) on impeller vanes and volute when run against a closed or restricted suction
- Shaft sleeve wear at the packing/seal area
- Coupling misalignment or wear leading to vibration
- Corrosion of bronze/cast iron wetted parts in prolonged seawater or ballast water service
Inspection checklist
- Check pump performance (flow/pressure at a known valve setting) against the nameplate curve for signs of wear
- Inspect mechanical seal or packing gland for leakage rate and condition
- Check coupling alignment between pump and driver
- Listen/feel for abnormal vibration or noise indicating bearing or cavitation problems
- Inspect suction strainer for fouling that could induce cavitation
- Check bearing temperature and lubrication condition
- Verify baseplate and foundation bolts are tight and free of corrosion

Safety

Ballast pumps are normally part of the vessel's essential auxiliary machinery survey scope. Surveyors expect evidence of periodic performance testing and PMS records, and for the pump to be demonstrated operable at survey where ballast system integrity is being examined.
