As a Tunnel Thruster, it is normally installed in a bow or stern tunnel, or in a retractable housing, with an electric, hydraulic or mechanical drive and bridge control interfaces. In that role, its primary purpose is to generate transverse or steerable thrust for low-speed manoeuvring, berthing and position control.
