The ZF 25000A is a high‑power, single‑stage reduction propulsion gearbox delivering up to 25 MW with a fixed 3:1 ratio, converting engine speed of 1200 rpm to propeller speed of about 400 rpm. As a Reduction Gear, it is normally installed between a propulsion engine or motor and the shaft line, reducing or adapting rotational speed and transmitting torque to the propeller. In that role, its primary purpose is to match prime-mover speed and torque to the propulsion shaft while providing the required clutching or reduction arrangement. Single-stage, multi-stage and epicyclic marine gearboxes differ in gear geometry and layout, but all depend on alignment, tooth contact, bearings and clean pressurized lubrication.
