As an Oil Mist Detector, it is normally installed on a large diesel engine with detector or sampling points connected to crankcase compartments and an alarm unit. In that role, its primary purpose is to warn of abnormal oil-mist formation that can precede a crankcase hot spot or explosion. Unlike ordinary temperature monitoring, oil-mist detection responds to aerosol concentration and is sensitive to sampling cleanliness, optical condition and engine compartment balance.
