Common issues
- Sensor drift on vibration, temperature and pressure transmitters, leading to false alarms or missed trends

Inspection checklist
- Verify sensor readings against independent local instruments as a spot-check on calibration
- Test the alarm system function, including audible/visual alarms on the bridge and in the ECR
- Check historical trend data for continuity and gaps
- Verify UPS/backup power function for the monitoring server
- Check network/communication status between remote I/O and the central system
- Review the alarm log for unacknowledged or suppressed alarms
- Confirm software/firmware version consistency across the system
- Verify the data backup routine is running and backups are retrievable

Safety
- A condition monitoring system is not a safety system in itself - it should not replace a required alarm/shutdown system unless specifically class-approved to do so
- False confidence from an uncalibrated or drifting sensor can delay detection of a genuine fault - treat a sudden 'improvement' in a trend with suspicion
- System changes or software updates should be tested before being relied upon operationally
Class survey
Where the condition monitoring system supports a machinery survey scheme based on condition rather than fixed intervals, class will want documented calibration records, retained trend data, and evidence that alarm limits are reviewed and justified. Where the alarm/monitoring function is integrated with the vessel's approved alarm and safety system, it is subject to periodic testing per the ship's approved test schedule.
