Inspector Detail

Common issues
- Gelcoat blistering or osmosis on the hull below the waterline on older GRP hulls
- Corroded or stiff-operating skin fittings and seacocks
- Bilge pump or float switch failure going unnoticed until a wet bilge alarm
- Fuel hose and tank vent deterioration, particularly on craft that have run ethanol-blended fuel
- Corrosion at battery terminals and DC wiring due to a damp bilge environment
- Steering cable or hydraulic steering stiffness from lack of lubrication
Inspection checklist
- Hull below the waterline for blistering, cracking or impact damage
- Skin fittings and seacocks for free operation and corrosion
- Bilge pump and float switch function test
- Fuel lines, tank and vent fittings for degradation or leakage
- Battery installation, terminals and wiring for corrosion and secure mounting
- Steering system for free play and lubrication
- Safety equipment on board (fire extinguisher, lifejackets, flares) against expiry dates
- RCD builder's plate and capacity/load markings present and legible
Service intervals
| Antifouling and hull inspection (haul-out) | typically annual for GRP recreational craft in this size class |
| Sacrificial anode renewal | typically annual, or sooner if visually consumed |
| Steering system lubrication | per the installed steering system manual, commonly annual |
| Battery and electrical connection check | annual or at each haul-out |
| Safety equipment renewal (extinguisher service, flares) | per the expiry dates stamped on the individual items |
Typical wear limits
| Sacrificial anode consumption | renew when consumed to roughly half of its original mass - confirm against general marine anode practice for the anode size fitted |
| Steering cable free play | more than a small amount of play at the wheel generally indicates renewal is due - confirm against the steering system's own manual |
| Hull blister depth/extent | assessment of whether blistering requires repair should be made by a qualified surveyor rather than against a fixed figure |
Ranges are typical for this design class. Always confirm against the manufacturer documentation for your serial number.
Critical spares
- Sacrificial anodes (size per the installed drive/hull fittings)
- Bilge pump and float switch
- Seacock and skin fitting seals
- Steering cable or hydraulic steering fluid, per the fitted system
- Fuel filter, if an inboard or sterndrive engine is fitted
Safety
- Fuel vapour accumulating in an enclosed bilge on petrol-powered craft
- Carbon monoxide from engine or generator exhaust near the cockpit or swim platform
- Fire extinguisher accessibility and condition
- Compliance with the RCD design category and load/persons capacity marked on the builder's plate
Class survey
This record reflects a DNV Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) type approval/certificate, not a classification society machinery survey. RCD approval concerns conformity of the design and construction to the applicable design category at build; it does not imply a periodic survey regime in the SOLAS/class sense.
