Flow Switch · Instrumentation & Gauges

Class-certified type (DNV register) · technical data sheet not yet verified

The SIKA VH500NI, VH500NM, VH500RI and VH500RM are paddle-type flow switches covered by DNV certificate TAA000011M. They detect flow in a pipe and switch an electrical contact to signal flow or no flow. They are installed in cooling, lubrication and other process lines on board to monitor flow and trigger an alarm or interlock when flow is lost.

Service

Service notes.

What our service work and the manufacturer documentation say about keeping this model running.

Function-test the switch by comparing its electrical state with confirmed actual flow in the connected system. Inspect the process connection for leakage and the electrical enclosure, terminals and cable gland for moisture or heat damage. When the switch is removed, examine the paddle for distortion, deposits and free movement before reinstalling it in the correct orientation. After replacement or piping modification, verify the interlock or alarm logic through the full operating sequence. Switching point, paddle dimensions, process limits and electrical ratings must be obtained from SIKA documentation for the exact VH500 variant.

Inspection

Common failures & inspection points

Inspection

Inspector Detail

Common issues

  • Adhesion failure from inadequate substrate cleaning/priming before application
  • Incomplete cure from incorrect mix ratio (two-component grades) or application outside the temperature/humidity range
  • Reduced shelf life when stored outside the maker's specified temperature range
  • Joint movement exceeding the product's designed elongation, causing bond-line cracking
  • Contamination of the bonding surface by oil, grease or release agents before application

Inspection checklist

  • Check batch/expiry date and storage conditions before use
  • Verify substrate preparation and primer application per the datasheet
  • Confirm correct mixing ratio and working/pot life for two-component grades
  • Visual inspection of the cured bead/joint for continuity, adhesion and absence of cracking
  • Confirm application conditions (temperature, humidity) were within the maker's limits

Service intervals

Shelf life / expiry check before useper the batch expiry date - confirm the exact period against the product datasheet
Storage condition checkperiodic, per the safety data sheet temperature limits
Joint/repair visual inspection after applicationtypically at each annual survey
Primer compatibility checkeach application

Critical spares

  • Replacement adhesive/sealant from current-dated stock (same type)
  • Compatible primer/activator specified by the product system
  • Mixing nozzles or cartridge guns for two-component cartridge grades
  • PPE per the safety data sheet
  • Masking and application tools

Safety

  • Uncured product may cause skin/eye irritation or sensitization - follow the safety data sheet for PPE and ventilation
  • Some grades are flammable/solvent-based - control ignition sources
  • Store per the safety data sheet temperature limits

Class survey

Structural or watertight bonding/sealing applications typically require the product's class Type Approval certificate to be referenced, with application records (batch, date, surveyor acceptance where required) retained for the specific repair or installation.

Spares

Replacement Parts

Spare parts notes

A complete matching flow switch is often the most useful spare because internal switching parts may not be intended for shipboard repair. Where the manufacturer supplies them separately, keep the correct paddle, process seal or gasket and approved electrical connector or gland parts. Spare units must match the installed process connection, material, switching function and electrical rating rather than only the VH500 family name.

Makers and authorised dealers rarely quote marine equipment without the vessel. With these details we can check availability and prices faster; without them we may have to ask first, which can cost a few days. If you cannot share the vessel, a photo of the equipment’s rating plate does the same job — attach it below or send it as a reply to our confirmation e-mail.

Frequently asked

Three things people ask first.

Is this model's data free?

Yes. Specifications, documents and service notes for this model are readable without an account. An account adds saved searches and requests, nothing is taken away.

Can you find a part for this exact model?

Yes. Tell us the manufacturer, the model and what you need — a person reads every request and replies by e-mail.

The specifications look wrong — what now?

Send us the nameplate or the correct value. We check it against the manufacturer datasheet or class-society record and update the page.
