OceanGuard® Ballast Water Management System (HMT-50~4000)
The OceanGuard Ballast Water Management System (HMT-50~4000) from Headway Technology Group uses UV-based technology to treat ballast water, preventing invasive species and meeting IMO D-2 standards.
Inspector Detail
▸
Common issues
- UV lamp intensity degradation over lamp life, reducing the UV dose delivered to the treated water
- Quartz sleeve fouling from biofilm or scale build-up, reducing UV transmittance and treatment effectiveness
- Automatic backwash filter clogging or seal wear, reducing filtration flow
- UV intensity or turbidity sensor drift/fouling giving false low-dose alarms
- Control system or PLC faults interrupting automatic operation
- Lamp ballast/power supply unit failure for individual lamp modules
- Reduced flow or increased power draw in turbid, high-sediment port water affecting D-2 compliance
Inspection checklist
- Check UV lamp operating hours against the manufacturer's rated lamp life
- Inspect and clean quartz sleeves per schedule or whenever a transmittance alarm occurs
- Verify backwash filter operation and inspect the filter element/screen for damage
- Check UV intensity sensor calibration and cleanliness
- Review control system logs for unresolved alarms on relevant voyages
- Check flow meter accuracy against the pump's rated flow
- Inspect the treatment chamber and piping for external corrosion or leakage
- Confirm Ballast Water Record Book entries match the D-2 compliant operation logged by the system
- Test the manual override/bypass procedure and alarm functions
Service intervals
| UV lamp replacement | per the manufacturer's rated lamp life, commonly in the order of 8,000-12,000 hours for medium-pressure UV systems - confirm the HMT-series figure against Headway's manual |
| Quartz sleeve cleaning/inspection | every 3-6 months or on a transmittance alarm, more often in fouling-prone or turbid water |
| UV sensor calibration | annually or per manufacturer's schedule |
| Backwash filter inspection/seal replacement | annually or per manufacturer's schedule |
| System commissioning/functional test | annually, as part of the IMO D-2 compliance and BWMS Code survey regime |
Typical wear limits
| UV transmittance/sleeve fouling | treat as needing cleaning once the system's own UV-intensity sensor reports below the manufacturer's alarm threshold, not by visual judgement alone |
| Backwash filter screen | renew on physical damage or once backwash no longer restores design flow, per the manufacturer's condition criteria |
Ranges are typical for this design class. Always confirm against the manufacturer documentation for your serial number.
Critical spares
- UV lamp (correct rating for the HMT capacity fitted)
- Quartz sleeve
- UV lamp ballast/power supply module
- Backwash filter element/screen
- UV intensity sensor
- Sleeve wiper seal kit, on systems with automatic wipers
Safety
- UV radiation exposure - never view an energised lamp directly or bypass the lamp housing interlocks
- Electrical hazard at lamp ballast/power units - isolate before servicing
- Confined space entry considerations for internal filter/chamber inspection
- Handling of quartz sleeves - breakage and cut hazard during cleaning
- System pressure - depressurise before opening filter housings
Class survey
Ballast Water Management Systems are subject to survey under the BWM Convention and BWMS Code, including the relevant IMO (and, where applicable, USCG) type approval. Commissioning testing and periodic renewal survey are required to support the International Ballast Water Management Certificate, and records of D-2 compliant operation, alarms, and any bypass events must be retained in the Ballast Water Record Book for review at survey and PSC inspection.
