Inspection checklist

• Visual check for cracks, deformation, or excessive corrosion on body and cones
• Check locking handle/lever operates smoothly through its full range
• Check the locking indicator, where fitted, shows the correct locked/unlocked state
• Confirm marking - type, load rating, manufacturer - is legible
• Check correct engagement in container corner castings during use
• Withdraw from service any unit that fails a visual or function check

• Replacement handle/lever assembly
• Locking pin/spring set
• Complete replacement twistlock units for those failing inspection - individual units are typically replaced rather than repaired once cracked or badly worn

Safety

• A failed or improperly engaged twistlock can allow container stack collapse or loss overboard in heavy weather
• Sharp edges and pinch points during manual operation on deck
• Working at height on container stacks during lashing operations - fall protection applies
• Never use a twistlock showing cracks or a bent cone, under any circumstances

Class survey

Container securing equipment is covered by the ship's approved Cargo Securing Manual; class/flag verifies that the fleet of lashing equipment is inspected, that defective units are withdrawn from service, and that inspection records are maintained - twistlocks are not individually surveyed as machinery, but CSM compliance is checked at survey.

Estimated lifetime: Not applicable in operating hours - twistlocks are assessed by condition and cycle-based inspection under the Cargo Securing Manual rather than a running-hour figure; typical service life before fleet renewal is often several years but is condition-driven.
