Woven Axminster Carpet Ax718U with Integral felt backing
The Brintons Carpets Ltd Ax718U is a woven Axminster carpet construction with integral felt backing intended for approved marine interior use. It is fitted as a finished floor covering in accommodation and public spaces rather than forming part of machinery or lifesaving equipment. Axminster construction locks the pile yarn into a woven backing, giving a durable textile surface suitable for areas with repeated foot traffic. The integral felt backing provides part of the installed carpet build-up and should not be replaced casually with a different backing when maintaining approval traceability. On ships, the fire-performance certification of the exact carpet construction is as important as colour and wear resistance. Adhesive, underlay and substrate preparation may also affect the installed floor system and must follow the vessel's approved interior specification. Replacement material should therefore match the certified product or an independently approved equivalent rather than only the visible pattern.

Common issues
- Seam or edge lifting / delamination of the felt backing over time
- Pile crushing or matting in high-traffic areas
- Staining and moisture retention that can promote mould in humid spaces
- Loss of fire-retardant treatment effectiveness with repeated wet-cleaning or wear
- Fraying at doorways and cabin thresholds
- Colour fading from UV exposure near windows and skylights
Inspection checklist
- Check seams and edges for lifting or delamination
- Check for excessive wear or thinning in walkways and high-traffic routes
- Verify the MED/wheelmark fire test certificate is retained and matches the material actually fitted
- Check for trip hazards at transitions and thresholds
- Check for mould or staining in damp areas (galleys, heads, exterior-adjacent cabins)
- Confirm no uncertified material has been used for repairs or replacement since the last survey
Service intervals
| General condition inspection | at each interior/accommodation survey |
| Replacement | wear-driven rather than a fixed schedule, typically several years depending on traffic |
| Re-certification | required whenever the carpet is replaced with new material |
Critical spares
- Matching or equivalently fire-certified replacement carpet (roll/tiles)
- Compatible fire-rated adhesive and underlay
- Edge trim / threshold strips
Safety
- Uncertified replacement or repair material can invalidate compliance for surface flammability, smoke and toxicity
- Loose or delaminated carpet edges are a trip hazard, especially in escape routes
- Do not use flammable solvent-based adhesives inconsistent with the originally tested assembly
Class survey
Interior linings and floor coverings are checked against the FTP Code (surface flammability, smoke and toxicity) at fire safety survey; any replacement material in accommodation spaces or escape routes must carry its own MED/wheelmark certificate for the same tested assembly (backing, adhesive, underlay) as originally approved - like-for-like substitution without re-certification is a common survey finding.

Service & Maintenance
Inspect high-traffic areas, seams, thresholds and transitions for wear, loose edges and trip hazards during accommodation rounds. Investigate moisture or staining to identify the underlying leak or cleaning issue before replacing the visible carpet. Cleaning methods and chemicals should follow the carpet manufacturer's guidance so that backing and fire-performance characteristics are not unintentionally damaged. During refit, verify that replacement rolls or patches retain the required marine approval and that the installed backing and adhesive system are compatible. Any fire-test limitations or installation conditions should be taken from the certificate and Brintons documentation.
