Common issues
- Cover abrasion, cuts or UV degradation from prolonged exposure and improper stowage
- Coupling leakage from worn or damaged gaskets
- Internal lining delamination or mildew from inadequate drying before stowage
- Coupling corrosion, especially on non-stainless fittings in a marine environment
- Hose weeping or bursting under test pressure indicating internal degradation
- Reduced flow from kinking or improper flaking/coiling in the hose box or reel
Inspection checklist
- Visually inspect the full hose length for cuts, abrasion, mildew and UV damage
- Check couplings for corrosion, thread condition and secure attachment to the hose
- Inspect coupling gaskets for hardening or damage
- Conduct a hydrostatic pressure test per FSS Code/maker requirement and check for leaks or bursting
- Confirm the hose is correctly connected, flaked/coiled and stowed in its box or reel
- Check the hose reel or rack mechanism, if fitted, for free operation
- Verify hose length and diameter match the fire main/nozzle it is paired with
- Confirm hose markings (size, pressure rating, date) remain legible
Service intervals
| Visual inspection and function check | monthly per SOLAS/FSS Code fire equipment routine |
| Hydrostatic pressure test | annually, per FSS Code Chapter 3 requirement |
| Full unroll, dry and re-stow | periodically per SMS, commonly at each drill or every 1-3 months |
Critical spares
- Replacement fire hose of matching length, diameter and pressure rating
- Coupling gaskets
- Coupling sets, where the standard permits field replacement
Safety
- High-pressure water discharge risk during pressure testing - secure the hose and clear the area
- Whipping hazard from an uncontrolled or burst hose under pressure
- Trip hazard from hoses run out during drills or firefighting
Class survey
Fire hoses are checked at each safety equipment survey for compliance with FSS Code Chapter 3 - correct number, length, diameter and coupling compatibility with the fire main and international shore connection, plus valid pressure test records.
