Inspection checklist
- Compass card moves freely and sits level
- Bowl liquid clear, full, and free of air bubbles
- Illumination working
- Gimbal moves freely through its full range
- Corrector magnets, Flinders bar and quadrantal spheres present, correctly positioned and free of corrosion
- Current deviation card posted at the compass
- Mounting/binnacle secure and free of corrosion
- Cross-check compass heading against gyro/GPS course-over-ground for gross error
- Safe distance table posted and no unauthorised equipment placed within it
Service intervals

Critical spares

Safety
- This compass is the vessel's power-independent backup to electronic positioning - never place magnetic materials or electronics within the posted safe distance
- Compass bowl liquid should be treated as a mild fire/handling hazard if a bowl is found leaking - avoid open flame nearby and follow the maker's handling data
- Access to a binnacle/repeater on a monkey island or exposed position is a working-at-height task
Class survey
SOLAS/class requires a properly adjusted magnetic compass as backup to electronic position-fixing: current deviation card displayed, compass adjuster's certificate retained on board, safe distance table posted, and deviation verified at annual/renewal survey.
