Common issues

• Transit frame installed with insert orientation that does not match the certified drawing, voiding the A60/A0 rating
• Unused cable ways left open or fitted with an incorrectly sized blank insert instead of the approved filler block
• Compression bolts left under-torqued after cables are added or removed later in the ship's life
• Cable fill exceeding the frame's certified maximum after later cable additions
• Corrosion or paint over-spray obscuring the type-approval marking on the frame
• Sealing compound (compound-filled variants) shrinking or cracking over time, opening a path through the fire barrier
• Re-cabling work leaving glands unsealed at the transit, especially in engine room and cable-deck bulkheads

Inspection checklist

• Confirm the frame model and A60/A0 marking is legible and matches the approved drawing
• Check that every cable way is filled with either a live cable or an approved blank insert - no open ways
• Verify compression bolts are torqued to the value on the manufacturer's installation sheet
• Inspect the sealing face for visible gaps, cracks or missing sealant beads
• Check frame welds and mounting to the bulkhead/deck for corrosion or mechanical damage
• Verify the earthing/bonding strap from frame to hull structure is intact
• Confirm no cables have been added since the last certified installation without updating the cable schedule
• Check the transit is not obstructed by later-fitted lagging, cable trays or outfitting

• Do not over-tighten compression bolts beyond the specified torque - this can crack insert blocks and create new leak paths

Class survey

Surveyors typically confirm the installed transit matches the type-approved drawing and current cable schedule, that fire integrity markings remain legible, and that no unrecorded cable additions have compromised the certified rating. Usually covered under hull/fire safety rounds rather than a dedicated CSM item.

Estimated lifetime: Not applicable in running hours - this is a passive fire-rated penetration. Expected service life follows the vessel's structural life, subject to periodic condition and compression checks.
