Common issues

• Blistering or loss of adhesion where substrate preparation (degreasing, abrasion) was inadequate before application
• Extended or incomplete cure in cold, damp compartments, leaving a soft, solvent-sensitive film
• Colour or gloss mismatch between production batches applied to the same visible area
• Cracking or crazing at plate seams and expansion joints where the coating was applied without a flexible detail
• Pinholing on vertical or overhead surfaces from spray application at excessive film build
• Early breakdown from surface contamination (oil, condensation, salt) present before overcoating

Inspection checklist

• Visual survey for blistering, delamination, cracking or chalking, especially at joints and penetrations
• Dry film thickness (DFT) spot checks with a calibrated magnetic gauge against the approved system build-up
• Adhesion assessment (cross-cut or pull-off where accessible) on suspect areas
• Cure hardness check on recently coated surfaces before returning the compartment to service
• Confirm delivery certificate and batch numbers match the DNV MED approval (MEDB0000BNV) and product data sheet
• Check application records: substrate temperature, humidity, dew point and overcoating intervals were logged
• Verify the coating is used only in the locations and fire class covered by its approval

Ranges are typical for this design class. Always confirm against the manufacturer documentation for your serial number.

Critical spares

• Matching base and curing agent components from the same certified system - do not mix with a different manufacturer's hardener
• Approved thinner/reducer for the system, for cleaning and thinning only within the permitted limit
• Application equipment consumables (spray tips, filters) suited to a two-component epoxy

Safety

• Solvent vapour/VOC exposure during application in enclosed compartments - requires forced ventilation and vapour-rated lighting
• Two-component epoxy hardener can cause skin sensitisation and eye irritation - PPE required for applicators
• Uncured epoxy and solvent thinners are flammable during application and drying
• Confined space entry procedures apply when coating tanks or enclosed void spaces

Class survey

Surveyor checks that the DNV MED Module B certificate (MEDB0000BNV) is current and that the coating is applied only in the locations and fire class covered by the approval; batch traceability and application records are normally requested at newbuilding or major repair rather than routine class survey.
