Common issues
- Stator (elastomer) wear or swelling from chemical incompatibility or dry-running
- Rotor wear from abrasive solids carried in the sludge/waste stream
- Mechanical seal or packing leakage at the drive shaft
- Dry-running damage when suction is starved by a low tank level
- Coupling rod/universal joint wear inside the pumping element
- Pulsation or vibration from a partially blocked suction line
Inspection checklist
- Verify dry-run protection (low-level cutout on the suction tank) is functional
- Inspect the mechanical seal or gland packing for leakage
- Check stator condition by pressure/vacuum test or visual inspection at overhaul
- Verify coupling rod/universal joint play is within the maker's limit
- Check the suction strainer for blockage or fouling
- Monitor motor current and discharge pressure trend against baseline for early wear detection
- Verify the relief valve (if fitted) set point and function

Safety
- Never run dry - rapid stator damage and localized overheating can result
- Isolate and lock out the driver before opening the pump for stator/rotor service

- Confirm the relief valve (if fitted) before assuming the pump is protected against a blocked discharge
Class survey
Sludge/sewage pumps are generally checked under the pollution prevention (sewage treatment) survey scope where applicable, confirming the pump serving that system is operational and any required standby arrangement is in place.
