Common issues

• Motion or activity sensor false triggers or failure to detect, from misalignment or obstruction
• Reset button or panel wear from frequent use
• Backup power or battery degradation affecting alarm function during a power loss
• Software or firmware faults requiring a reset or update
• Escalation stage timing drift away from the configured SOLAS-required intervals
• Wiring or connection faults to the bridge, cabins or public spaces used for the second-stage alarm

Inspection checklist

• Function test of the dormant period timer and full escalation sequence (bridge, then officer's cabin or duty mess, then master's cabin) per SOLAS requirement
• Reset switch operation check from all designated positions
• Backup power supply and battery condition and automatic changeover check
• Alarm audibility confirmation at all required remote locations
• System log review for false alarms or fault history
• Sensor coverage and sensitivity setting review for the actual bridge layout

Safety

• BNWAS must not be defeated, disabled, or have its dormant period extended beyond SOLAS-permitted limits, as this removes a watchkeeping safety barrier
• Verify the alarm reaches every required escalation point - crew safety depends on the full escalation chain working, not just the bridge alarm
• Coordinate function tests with the bridge team so a live escalation test is not mistaken for an actual emergency, and restore the system to normal operating mode immediately afterward

Class survey

BNWAS is a SOLAS chapter V mandatory item; class and flag surveys typically require a documented function test of the full alarm and escalation chain, verification that the dormant period setting is compliant, and confirmation the system cannot be defeated - maintain test records for survey.
