Inspector Detail

Common issues

  • Hydraulic cylinder seal leakage at luffing and hoist cylinders, especially rod seals exposed to salt spray
  • Wire rope wear and corrosion, particularly at sheave contact points and rope terminations
  • Slew ring/bearing wear leading to increased backlash and uneven load distribution
  • Hydraulic hose chafing and failure at moving joints along the boom
  • Load moment/overload protection sensor drift causing nuisance trips or, worse, missed cutouts
  • Brake lining wear on hoist and slew drives
  • Corrosion under paint at weld seams and pin/bushing connections in the boom structure
  • Slewing gear/pinion tooth wear from repeated start-stop cycling

Inspection checklist

  • Visual inspection of all wire ropes for broken wires, kinks, corrosion and diameter reduction
  • Function test of overload/load moment limiter and all limit switches
  • Check hydraulic oil condition (particle count, water content) and filter differential pressure
  • Inspect slew ring bolts for correct torque and check for bearing play
  • Inspect boom pins, bushings and greasing points for wear and adequate lubrication
  • Check hydraulic cylinders for external leakage, rod scoring and cushioning function
  • Test emergency stop and operator communication systems
  • Load test per class requirements (proof load / periodic load test)
  • Check structural welds and boom sections for cracks or deformation
  • Verify brake holding capacity on hoist and slew drives

Service intervals

Hydraulic oil sample analysisevery 2000 running hours or annually
Hydraulic filter replacementevery 500-1000 hours or per differential pressure indicator
Wire rope detailed inspectionevery 3 months, with monthly visual checks
Wire rope replacementcondition-based, typically 3-5 years depending on duty cycle
Slew ring and gear lubricationweekly to monthly per manufacturer's lubrication chart
Proof load testannually or per class/flag requirement
Full crane survey/overhaulevery 4-5 years, aligned with class special survey

Typical wear limits

Wire rope diameter reductiondiscard typically at 7-10% reduction from nominal - confirm against class/manufacturer's rope discard criteria
Wire rope broken wiresdiscard criteria typically 6 broken wires in one lay or 3 in one strand - confirm against ISO 4309 or manufacturer's standard
Slew ring bearing playmanufacturer-specific tolerance, generally a few tenths of a mm before action - confirm against manufacturer's table
Brake lining thicknesscondition-based renewal before base material contact - confirm manufacturer's minimum

Ranges are typical for this design class. Always confirm against the manufacturer documentation for your serial number.

Critical spares

  • Hydraulic cylinder seal kits (luffing and hoist)
  • Wire ropes (hoist and luffing, correct construction and diameter)
  • Main hydraulic pump/motor unit
  • Hoist and slew brake linings
  • Load cell / load moment sensor
  • Slew ring bearing (long lead time - track condition closely)
  • Hydraulic hoses for boom articulation runs
  • Limit switches and proximity sensors

Safety

  • Falling load or boom failure from undetected wire rope or structural degradation - never exceed rope discard criteria
  • Hydraulic system stored energy - accumulators and pressurised lines must be de-pressurised before maintenance
  • Overload protection must never be bypassed or defeated
  • Crush/pinch hazards at slew ring and boom pivot points during maintenance
  • Working at height on boom/jib structure

Class survey

Cargo cranes fall under Lifting Appliances survey requirements - annual thorough examination and periodic proof load test (typically every 4-5 years or per flag/class rules), with load test records, NDT of critical structural areas and wire rope condition kept in the ship's lifting appliance register.

Estimated lifetime: Structure and slew ring generally rated for the vessel's service life (20-25 years) with periodic component overhaul; hydraulic pumps/motors typically 20,000-40,000 hours between major overhaul depending on duty cycle - confirm against manufacturer's maintenance manual

Free of charge — send us your request for TTS Marine equipment. Our team checks it and replies by e-mail.

Makers and authorised dealers rarely quote marine equipment without the vessel. With these details we can check availability and prices faster; without them we may have to ask first, which can cost a few days. If you cannot share the vessel, a photo of the equipment’s rating plate does the same job — attach it below or send it as a reply to our confirmation e-mail.

Frequently asked

Three things people ask first.

Is this model's data free?

Yes. Specifications, documents and service notes for this model are readable without an account. An account adds saved searches and requests, nothing is taken away.

Can you find a part for this exact model?

Yes. Tell us the manufacturer, the model and what you need — a person reads every request and replies by e-mail.

The specifications look wrong — what now?

Send us the nameplate or the correct value. We check it against the manufacturer datasheet or class-society record and update the page.
