The Alfa Laval S.p.A. T21 is a gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchanger designed for a wide range of liquid-to-liquid and other approved heat-transfer duties. Heat is transferred through a removable pack of corrugated plates, with gaskets separating and directing the two media through alternating channels. On board ship it can be installed in engine-room cooling, heating, heat-recovery or other utility systems when the selected plate and gasket materials suit the media. Unlike a brazed CB or CBM exchanger, the T21 can be opened for inspection, mechanical cleaning, gasket replacement and plate replacement. Its maintainable construction is useful where fouling risk or the need for direct inspection makes a permanently bonded exchanger less attractive. Trend inlet and outlet temperatures, pressures and differential pressure so gradual fouling is detected before performance becomes unacceptable. Inspect the frame, plate pack, gaskets, connections and supports for leakage, corrosion, gasket displacement and piping strain. When opened, check plates for deposits, pitting, erosion, cracks and deformation, and clean only with methods compatible with the installed plate and gasket materials. Reassemble the plates in the documented sequence and tighten only to the dimension specified for that exact unit; refer to the manufacturer documentation for the exact figure.
Carry the exact gasket type used in the installed plate pack and, where the vessel's redundancy and trading pattern justify it, a limited number of matching spare plates. Useful associated spares include connection seals, strainer elements, valve service kits and approved cleaning consumables. All plate and gasket materials must be matched to the installed service and serial-number configuration.
