Common failures & inspection points
Inspection of oil content in discharge (Overboard Monitor): ensure that the 15-ppm limit value is met; calibration and functional test of the ORB (Oil Record Book)-relevant oil content monitor according to IMO MEPC 107(49).
Inspection and cleaning of separator disc stack (Disc Stack / Bowl): check deposits, crusting or corrosion on discs and drum; in self-cleaning designs (self-desludging) check desludging valves and seals.
Inspection of preheating (Preheater): check temperature control and heating capacity; verify operating temperature at setpoint (typically 60–85 °C), since separation performance is temperature-dependent.
Condition inspection of seals, O-rings and wear parts: particularly drum seals, desludging valve seals and centering seal components for wear and leaks; observe manufacturer intervals.
Functional test of automatic filter (Auto-filter): test backflush filter upstream of separator for blockage and proper backflush function; check filter screen for damage.
Inspection of feed pump (Feed Pump): check delivery rate, pressure and leakage; inspect condition of mechanical seal and impeller; note signs of cavitation.
Inspection of drive unit (Direct drive / Belt drive): For direct drive: check motor bearings, vibrations and operating temperature. For belt drive: check belt tension, wear and pulleys.
Documentation and entry in the Oil Record Book: Ensure that all operating hours, sludging operations, discharges and overboard drainage are correctly recorded; verify function of the SafetyMaster / Overboard valve and its blocking logic.
