Common failures & inspection points
Check oil content monitor (15 ppm bilge alarm) for calibration and correct function per IMO MEPC.107(49) — sample temperatures up to 70 °C, zero-to-40 ppm range
Inspect and clean the disc stack / centrifuge bowl; remove sludge and oil accumulation on a scheduled basis
Verify feed pump operation, suction strainer condition, and inlet filter — clear blockages that reduce throughput or cause cavitation
Check heating element / steam coil for proper bilge water pre-heating (typically to 60–70 °C) to aid separation efficiency
Inspect all seals, gaskets, and O-rings in the separator bowl and pipework for leaks or wear
Test automatic discharge valves (clean-water outlet and dirty-side recirculation) for correct switching at the set ppm threshold
Review Oil Record Book entries and alarm/event log from the control unit (EPC 70 or equivalent) to confirm MARPOL compliance records are complete
Inspect sludge holding tank level, sludge discharge pump, and associated pipework; verify sludge is transferred to a certified reception facility and not bypassed
