Check for exhaust leaks along the muffler body, end caps, and welds — inspect under load and at idle

Inspect internal baffles and chambers (where applicable) for collapse, perforation, or packing deterioration that increases back-pressure or changes sound profile

Examine stainless steel shell for surface corrosion, heat discoloration, pitting, or physical damage from road debris or hull contact

Verify clamp-on and bolt-on fasteners (Gibson patented clampless system) for proper torque, corrosion, and seating — replace seized or stripped hardware

For marine units: inspect water-jacket / wet-exhaust passages for blockage, sediment build-up, or salt deposits that restrict cooling water flow

Measure exhaust back-pressure at the muffler inlet under load — compare against manufacturer baseline to detect internal restriction or collapse

Check mounting brackets, hangers, and transom mounts for fatigue cracks, rubber isolator deterioration, and secure chassis/hull attachment
