Visual inspection of external shell and welds for corrosion, cracks, or physical damage caused by thermal cycling or mechanical vibration

Check internal baffles, packing material (mineral wool / stainless mesh), and chamber walls for deterioration, erosion, or blockage by carbon deposits

Measure exhaust backpressure at inlet and compare against manufacturer specification; elevated backpressure indicates internal fouling or structural collapse

Inspect all flanged or ID/OD inlet and outlet connections for leaks, corrosion, and gasket condition; re-torque or replace fasteners as required

Check flexible exhaust connections and bellows expansion joints for cracks, leaks, or fatigue failure — these protect the silencer from engine vibration

Inspect mounting brackets, hangers, and supports for wear, corrosion, and secure attachment; verify clearance to combustibles when insulation is removed

For spark arrestor models: verify spark-arresting element (centrifugal chamber or wire mesh) is intact and free of debris accumulation that could impair spark retention

For catalytic combo units: check catalytic substrate condition for poisoning, fracture, or thermal degradation; verify emissions compliance against local regulatory limits (NOx, CO, NMHC)
