Listen for high-pitched noise during operation and inspect impeller for pitting/erosion patterns. Check NPSH available vs. required. Verify suction line integrity and intake screen cleanliness. Monitor discharge pressure fluctuations.

Inspect pump casing, impeller, and wear rings for salt-induced corrosion and pitting. Verify material selection (bronze-fitted, stainless steel, or special alloys for seawater). Check protective coatings/anodes if applicable. Sample coolant for salt content monthly.

Observe seal chamber for dripping/weeping. Verify seal lubrication level and cooling water flow (if liquid-lubricated seals). Check for worn seal faces under load. Measure face separation with feeler gauge. Replace seals per IOM specifications if leakage exceeds 1 drip per minute.

Monitor bearing temperature with infrared gun (normal range 140-180°F for grease lubrication). Check bearing grease condition for discoloration/contamination. Listen for abnormal noise/grinding. Measure radial and axial play with dial indicator. Inspect bearing seals for salt spray ingress in marine duty.

Measure clearance between impeller and wear rings with feeler gauge (typical initial clearance 0.015-0.025 inches). Check for scoring marks on wear surfaces. Monitor pump efficiency and capacity degradation. Replace wear rings when clearance exceeds manufacturer limits or impeller run-out increases.
