Smoke Detector · Fire Detection Systems
In environments where early smoke detection is critical, such as on large vessels and maritime structures, reflective optical beam smoke detectors provide reliable coverage over vast areas. The FireOPTIX-100M is a robust solution designed to detect smoke across distances ranging from 16.4 feet to 328 feet (5 meters to 100 meters). This model operates by projecting an infrared beam that reflects back to the detector, which then analyzes the signal for signs of smoke. The FireOPTIX-100M features a compact housing made of flame-retardant ABS and is rated IP50 for protection against dust. It can be mounted so the beam projects between 19 inches and 24 inches below and parallel to the ceiling, with lateral detection extending up to 30 feet on either side. The detector supports both 12 VDC and 24 VDC operation, drawing 4 mA in standby mode and 15 mA during an alarm. It includes automatic gain control to compensate for signal deterioration due to dirt accumulation, ensuring consistent performance over time. The FireOPTIX-100M also offers three selectable alarm thresholds at 25%, 35%, or 50% obscuration, and comes with a calibrated test filter for easy maintenance. Suitable for temperatures ranging from -4°F to 131°F (-20°C to +55°C), this detector is listed to UL 268 and meets stringent maritime safety standards.

| Functional/sensitivity test | per flag/SOLAS requirement, typically 6-monthly to annual as set by the ship's PMS |
|---|---|
| Lens/reflector cleaning | quarterly in dusty or engine room spaces, less frequent in clean accommodation spaces |
| Alignment check | after any structural work or significant vibration event affecting the mounting |
| Full system test with fire panel | annual |
| Signal strength / attenuation margin | manufacturers typically specify a minimum clear-to-obscured signal window for reliable detection - confirm the acceptable margin against Hochiki's commissioning documentation for this model |

Ranges are typical for this design class. Always confirm against the manufacturer documentation for your serial number.
Fixed fire detection is SOLAS Ch.II-2 equipment; class/flag will want functional test records, confirmation of correct zone/loop addressing, and evidence the detector type remains on the approved equipment list for the space it protects.
Estimated lifetime: Not rated in running hours; optical beam smoke detectors are typically kept in service for 10+ years with periodic sensitivity testing, subject to the maker's stated end-of-life recommendation.
