Common issues

• Slew bearing wear causing increased play and abnormal noise during slewing
• Hydraulic cylinder seal leakage on luffing, telescoping, or slewing cylinders

Inspection checklist

• Visual inspection of hoist wire rope for broken wires, corrosion, and diameter reduction
• Check all pins, bushes and pivot points for wear and adequate lubrication
• Function-test all motions (hoist, luff, slew, telescope) through full range
• Check hydraulic system for external leaks at cylinders, hoses, and fittings
• Test load moment indicator/overload protection against a known test load where required
• Inspect slew bearing bolts for correct torque and check for bearing play
• Check boom telescoping wear pads/shoes for wear and adjustment
• Inspect structural welds on boom sections and pedestal for cracks
• Check limit switches (hoist up/down, luff angle, slew) for correct operation
• Review crane logbook and load test/certification records

Safety

• A failed wire rope under load can whip - keep clear of the load path
• Secure the boom in its stowed position before heavy weather

Class survey

Typically subject to annual thorough examination/load test by a competent person and periodic class/flag verification of lifting appliance certification; load test certificates, LMI test records and wire rope inspection records are standard items requested at survey.
