Verify boiler pressure gauges are calibrated. Shut-off fittings must be clearly marked in open position. If calibration cannot be verified, obtain written statement from Master/Chief Engineer or use secondary gauge for verification. Critical for SOLAS compliance on all auxiliary and main boilers.

Ensure minimum 2 safety valves per boiler, adjusted under steam to not exceed 103% of approved design pressure. Test operational response and relieving capacity. Document valve settings in ship's records.

Inspect furnace refractory twice yearly minimum for cracks, brick displacement, and excessive soot accumulation. Check for hot spots or areas of excessive heat damage. For oil-fired boilers, soot removal via water jet cleaning (0.4-0.6 MPa, ~50 litres/min) between inspections.

Inspect water side of tubes for scale, corrosion, and deposits. Check for pin-hole leaks or bulging. Verify tube plate integrity and gasket condition. For oil-fired auxiliary boilers, water jet clean tubes when out of service. Replace corroded or damaged tubes per manufacturer specifications.

For boilers equipped with soot blowers: check for distortion, worn bearings, nozzle cracks, freedom of movement, and effective lubrication. Verify nozzles are not blocked. For burners: clean/replace atomiser tip, verify fuel pressure/temperature, test ignition system, inspect fuel pump condition, review burner management system fault history.
