The PROMAS Propulsion & Manoeuvring System is an integrated propulsion and manoeuvring system. Kongsberg Maritime designed it to meet the diverse challenges faced in various shipping sectors. The system incorporates a propeller, costa bulb, hub cap, and twisted rudder, all engineered as a single unit for streamlined water transition and optimized hydrodynamic properties. This design philosophy enhances energy efficiency, propulsive efficiency, and manoeuvrability. Typically, PROMAS delivers a 3-8% efficiency gain for single-screw vessels and a 2-6% improvement for multi-screw ships, translating to substantial fuel savings. The integrated bulb minimizes vortex creation and hub drag, further boosting propulsion thrust and energy efficiency. PROMAS offers customizable propeller designs with four or five blades, tailored to individual vessel profiles. For applications demanding high bollard pull, such as anchor handlers, fishing vessels, tugs, and trawlers, a nozzle can be incorporated into the system. The rudder is designed to mitigate cavitation risk and enhance both propulsive efficiency and manoeuvrability. A robust extension flap can also be added to the rudder for improved low-speed maneuvering.
