Wärtsilä's Optipull is a notable upgrade in this range, offering high hydrodynamic efficiency and improved manoeuvrability for vessels traveling at speeds of 15 knots or higher. Initially developed in 2004, the new Optipull technology has been expanded to cater to various applications including cruise ships, ferries, and roro vessels, with a power output ranging from 1,000 to 7,000kW. The pulling concept enhances efficiency by minimizing disturbances around the propeller, making it ideal for reducing appendage drag and improving propulsion in high-speed operations. Oskar Levander, head of conceptual design at Wärtsilä, notes that this system can achieve power savings of approximately 8-15 percent compared to traditional twin shaft lines, particularly suitable for shortsea ferries and small passenger/vehicle vessels.
