Common issues

• Colour fade/chalking from prolonged UV exposure, especially on high-visibility topside areas
• Poor adhesion or early flaking where surface preparation (blast profile, cleanliness) was inadequate
• Orange peel or sagging from incorrect thinning, spray pressure, or application in unsuitable weather
• Blistering from moisture entrapment beneath the coating
• Premature cracking where applied over a mismatched or over-aged primer/tie coat

Inspection checklist

• Visual check of gloss retention and colour uniformity
• Cross-cut or pull-off adhesion test on a sample area
• Dry film thickness (DFT) measurement against the paint system's data sheet
• Check for blistering, rust breakthrough, or mechanical damage at weld seams and edges
• Verify coverage/film continuity at edges, corners, and weld seams (known early-breakdown areas)

Critical spares

• Reserve tin(s) of the same product, batch, and colour code kept on board for touch-up
• Compatible primer/tie coat from the same manufacturer's system for repair areas
• Correct thinner/reducer specified for this product for spot repairs

Safety

• Solvent-based paint is flammable - fire precautions and adequate ventilation required during application and drying
• VOC inhalation risk - use appropriate respiratory protection and ventilation, especially in enclosed spaces
• Skin and eye irritation from uncured paint and thinners
• Confined space precautions if applying in tanks or enclosed compartments

Class survey

Coating condition is assessed as part of the vessel's structural condition at special surveys and drydockings rather than under a dedicated coating survey item; the IMO Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC) generally applies to specific ballast tanks/void spaces, not topside paint.
