Throw-Over Life Raft · Life Rafts
Survitec Throw-Over 20P is an inflatable throw-overboard liferaft intended to provide emergency survival capacity after abandonment of a vessel. It is stowed on deck in a protective container or approved stowage arrangement from which it can be released and thrown clear of the ship. Deployment is initiated through the painter arrangement so that inflation takes place after the raft is in the water and connected to the vessel in the prescribed manner. The "20P" designation identifies a twenty-person raft configuration, while the emergency-equipment pack and container style depend on the supplied version. Throw-over rafts differ from davit-launched rafts because occupants normally board after the raft has been deployed to the water rather than being lowered while already embarked. The raft forms part of the vessel's statutory lifesaving appliance inventory and therefore its certification, service status and stowage arrangement are as important as the raft fabric itself. Exact pack contents, permitted stowage height and release arrangement must be confirmed from the certificate and manufacturer documentation for the installed unit.

What our service work and the manufacturer documentation say about keeping this model running.
Maintain the raft strictly under SOLAS, flag-state, class and Survitec service requirements and send it to an approved service station at the required interval for the installed approval. Shipboard checks should focus on container condition, securing arrangement, painter routing, accessibility, launch clearance and any hydrostatic-release assembly. Confirm the service label, approval identification and next service status remain legible. Nothing should be lashed across the raft or arranged so that the unit cannot be released and thrown overboard as intended. Inflation-cylinder servicing, weak-link requirements and detailed internal acceptance criteria are not shipboard estimates and must follow the approved service documentation.
| Periodic service (annual, approved service station) | annually, unless a longer interval is explicitly permitted under an approved flag scheme |
|---|---|
| Raft replacement (end of design service life) | per manufacturer type approval, commonly in the low-to-mid teens of years - confirm against the specific certificate |
| Container/lashing condition check | at each routine LSA inspection round, typically monthly |
As a SOLAS LSA item, surveyors check the servicing certificate/due date, correct SOLAS pack type and capacity against the safety equipment certificate, and that stowage/securing arrangements allow the raft to be deployed as intended for its type (thrown, not davit-launched).
Liferafts are normally serviced as certified assemblies rather than repaired from a general onboard spare-parts stock. Practical shipboard spares can include the approved hydrostatic release and weak-link components where applicable, replacement securing hardware and manufacturer-approved cradle or lashing items. Internal raft spares, inflation components and emergency-pack items should be handled through an approved service station unless the manufacturer explicitly permits shipboard replacement.
