Common issues
- LED module output degradation over time reducing luminous intensity below the COLREG-required range
- Lens fogging or UV yellowing reducing light transmission
- Seal/gasket degradation allowing water ingress into the housing
- Corrosion at the mounting base or cable gland, particularly on exposed deck locations
- Power supply/driver board failure causing intermittent or total light loss
- Physical damage to the lens from ice, green water, or deck-work handling
Inspection checklist
- Visual check that the light is burning correctly at each bridge watch/daily check
- Inspect the lens for cracking, fogging, or heavy fouling
- Check the housing and gland for water ingress or corrosion
- Verify mounting security and alignment (correct arc of visibility, no obstruction)
- Test light intensity/function via the navigation light monitoring system, where fitted
- Check the spare/backup lamp arrangement functions correctly, if a dual-lamp fitting
- Confirm cabling and connections are corrosion-free and properly sealed

Safety

- Electrically isolate before servicing to avoid shock, even at the low DC voltage typical of LED navigation lights
Class survey
Class/flag surveys check that navigation lights meet COLREG Rule 22 visibility ranges and arcs, that any required navigation light monitoring/alarm system operates correctly, and that spare lamp arrangements, where required, are in place.
