The Hatlapa Steering Gear Type A is an electro-hydraulic steering gear installed in the steering gear compartment at the stern. It turns the rudder stock through the commanded angle from the bridge, using a hydraulic power unit and rudder actuator. The unit is listed as IMO compliant.

Surveyors check the hydraulic system for leaks, pump changeover, rudder angle indicators and alarms, and emergency steering operation. Regular oil sampling, filter changes and tests of the rudder movement from all control positions are standard checks.
Carry seal kits for the actuator and pipe connections, spare hydraulic filter elements, pump shaft seals, solenoid valve coils, rudder angle feedback transmitters and spare hydraulic oil sufficient for a top-up.
