Common issues
- Magnetron/transmitter output degradation over time, reducing detection range
- Waveguide or rotary joint moisture ingress causing signal loss or arcing
- Scanner unit motor/bearing wear causing rough or noisy antenna rotation
- Display dimming, burn-in or backlight failure on the 10.4-inch unit
- Scanner housing seal/gasket degradation letting water into the transmitter compartment
- Heading line or EBL/VRM misalignment after gyro or installation changes
- False/ghost echoes from trigger timing or receiver board faults
Inspection checklist
- Check scanner unit housing and radome seals for water ingress
- Verify transmitter output against baseline using the performance monitor if fitted
- Listen/observe antenna rotation for abnormal noise or speed variation
- Inspect waveguide/rotary joint (if accessible) for corrosion or moisture
- Test all range scales and confirm target discrimination against known references
- Verify heading line, EBL and VRM accuracy against actual bearings
- Check display brightness/contrast and screen condition
- Confirm interfaces to gyro, AIS and ECDIS are showing correctly on the radar
- Test alarm functions (guard zone, target alarms)
- Check power supply and breaker for the radar system

Safety
- Microwave radiation exposure in front of the scanner while transmitting - do not work in the beam path
- High voltage inside the transmitter unit even after power-down (capacitor discharge)
- Working aloft near the mast/scanner unit
Class survey
Radar is a SOLAS V mandatory item; class/flag verifies it is operational and interfaced correctly at annual and renewal surveys, but does not deep-test internal transmitter performance. Keep test/alarm function records in the PMS to support the survey.
