M30-MAX

Central Cooler (Plate Type) · Heat Exchangers

Class-certified type (DNV register) · technical data sheet not yet verified

Alfa Laval M30-MAX gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchanger from the M-line (marine very large central cooling). Plate count 30-600, max flow rate 1100 m3/h, design pressure 16 bar, max temperature 110 C. M-line is the workhorse industrial gasketed PHE — widely used for marine LT/HT cooling and engine cooling.

Inspection

Inspector Detail

Common issues

  • Gasket hardening or extrusion leading to external leakage at the plate pack edge
  • Seawater-side fouling (scaling or biofouling) reducing heat transfer, more pronounced at this unit's higher flow duty
  • Inter-plate leakage causing cross-contamination between the two media
  • Pitting, erosion or flow-induced vibration wear on plates at high flow rates
  • Tie-bolt loosening from thermal cycling, allowing gasket weep
  • Loss of cooling capacity flagged by rising LT/HT cooling water temperature under full engine load

Inspection checklist

  • Check for external weeping at the gasket line around the plate pack
  • Monitor differential temperature/pressure across the unit for fouling trend
  • Measure and record plate pack tightening (compressed) dimension against nameplate value
  • Inspect gaskets for hardening, cracking or extrusion when opened
  • Check plates for pitting, erosion or vibration wear, especially near inlet ports where flow velocity is highest
  • Verify frame bolts/tie bolts are torqued evenly given the larger plate pack size
  • Check sacrificial anode condition if fitted
  • Inspect connection flanges and instrument tappings for leaks
  • Confirm no cross-contamination via test/drain ports between circuits

Service intervals

External leak/temperature checkas part of routine engine room rounds
Opening for inspection and cleaningannually, or sooner if fouling trend or temperature rise indicates it
Gasket renewalat each opening, or per Alfa Laval's stated gasket life for glued gaskets
Tightening dimension verificationat every opening
Sacrificial anode inspection/renewal (if fitted)every 6-12 months

Typical wear limits

Plate corrosion/wear allowancelimited to a small fraction of original plate thickness before renewal - confirm the specific figure against Alfa Laval's M30 plate specification, do not estimate visually
Compressed plate pack (tightening) dimensionmaker-specified per plate count on the nameplate - re-tighten only to that dimension, never by feel

Ranges are typical for this design class. Always confirm against the manufacturer documentation for your serial number.

Critical spares

  • Complete gasket set for the plate pack
  • Individual replacement plates
  • Tie bolts and nuts
  • Connector/branch seals
  • Sacrificial anodes (if fitted)

Safety

  • Hot HT-side fluid can cause burns if the unit is opened before cooling down
  • Large plate pack held under spring/bolt tension - significant crush and pinch risk when loosening tie bolts
  • Heavy plates and frame components during handling - use lifting aids, manual handling injury risk is higher on this larger model
  • Chemical cleaning agents used for descaling require PPE and ventilation

Class survey

Central coolers serving essential cooling systems are typically included under Continuous Machinery Survey; a pressure/leak test is normally expected after any gasket renewal or plate replacement, and fouling/performance trend records support survey credit where the vessel is enrolled in a condition-based scheme.

Estimated lifetime: Plates typically remain in service 10-20 years depending on fouling and water quality; gaskets are shorter-lived, commonly 3-8 years depending on temperature and media.

Free of charge — send us your request for Alfa Laval equipment. Our team checks it and replies by e-mail.

Makers and authorised dealers rarely quote marine equipment without the vessel. With these details we can check availability and prices faster; without them we may have to ask first, which can cost a few days. If you cannot share the vessel, a photo of the equipment’s rating plate does the same job — attach it below or send it as a reply to our confirmation e-mail.

Frequently asked

Three things people ask first.

Is this model's data free?

Yes. Specifications, documents and service notes for this model are readable without an account. An account adds saved searches and requests, nothing is taken away.

Can you find a part for this exact model?

Yes. Tell us the manufacturer, the model and what you need — a person reads every request and replies by e-mail.

The specifications look wrong — what now?

Send us the nameplate or the correct value. We check it against the manufacturer datasheet or class-society record and update the page.
