Common failures & inspection points

Weld seam cracks in laser-welded plate stack (Compabloc C-Weld or AlfaRex)

Visual surface inspection of welds for micro-cracks, porosity or discolouration. If suspected: dye penetrant testing under UV light or vacuum test. On board vessel: temperature/pressure monitoring and leak tests via pressure test.

Dichtungs-Paar-Integrität an Halbschweiss-Trennlinie (RefTight-Welle außerhalb des Dichtungsnuts)

Check RefTight laser welding outside the sealing groove for brittle fracture risk. Sealing groove for uneven stress distribution. Perform vacuum test or pressure test. No dye penetrant on semi-welded plates (vacuum test required).

Sludging, fouling and deposits in plate body (vessels: seawater biofilm, lime sludge, oil)

Visual surface inspection for white spots (under UV for water-salt contamination) or black oil deposits. Monitor differential pressure (ΔP) and temperature differential drift. Perform performance audit (Alfa Laval AlphaCheck monitoring). If required: CIP flush test with analytical sample.

Material fatigue and vibration cracks (marine vibration, pressure fluctuations)

Dynamic pressure/temperature profile monitoring (trending of max-min peaks). Ultrasonic thickness measurement for erosion/corrosion. Visual inspection for cracks at plate edges and weld transitions. Vibration monitoring during operation.

Graphit-Dichtungs-Degradation (Compabloc+ mit eingeschlossener Graphit-Dichtung)

Visual inspection of sealing surface for oxidation, bloom, or material loss. Perform leakage tests (pressure test). Check for sealing material discharge at port holes. For critical applications: sealing replacement at Alfa-Laval service centers.

Corrosion and material attack in highly aggressive fluids (marine salt water, acidic fuels)

Oberflächenrauheitsmessung (Pit-Tiefenmessung). Chemische Analyse von Umlauf-Flüssigkeitsproben (Fe, Cu, Korrosionsmarker). Dickenmessung auf Erosions-Trends. Materialzertifikate überprüfen (316L, 254 SMO, Titan, etc.). Oberflächenfinish visuell bewerten.
