Common issues
- Display backlight dimming or failure over time, especially where the unit is exposed to sunlight/heat
- Cooling fan (where fitted) clogging with dust, reducing internal cooling and risking thermal shutdown
- Front panel touch membrane/gasket degradation allowing moisture ingress
- Connector corrosion at cable entries in exposed or weather locations
- Internal battery (RTC/BIOS backup) depletion causing clock or configuration loss after a power interruption
- Software/firmware faults after power interruptions, requiring reboot or reflash
Inspection checklist
- Check front panel gasket/seal integrity against the IP rating required for the installation location
- Inspect connectors and cable glands for corrosion or moisture ingress
- Verify cooling vents/fan, where fitted, are unobstructed and clean
- Check display brightness/legibility and touch response
- Verify mounting/vibration isolation is intact per the maker's installation instructions
- Confirm software/firmware version matches the maker's approved configuration
- Check power supply input voltage/quality at the unit against the DNV type approval limits
Service intervals
| Visual/functional inspection | per the vessel's planned maintenance schedule, typically every 3-6 months |
| Connector/gasket inspection | annually, more frequently in exposed weather locations |
| Firmware/software version check | at each planned maintenance round or after any power system disturbance |
| Backup/restore of configuration and firmware image | after any software update, and verified at each planned maintenance round |
Critical spares
- Complete replacement unit (panel PC or monitor) - board-level components are not normally field-repairable
- Mounting gasket kit
- Connector/cable set matching the installation
- Power supply module, if separately replaceable per the maker's documentation
- Cooling fan unit, if fitted
Safety
- Mains or DC supply wiring must be isolated before opening any enclosure
- Only use the maker's approved power supply/voltage range - the DNV type approval is tied to specific electrical parameters
- Do not defeat sealing or gaskets when reinstalling - loss of IP rating in a wet location is a shock/short-circuit hazard
Class survey
The DNV Type Approval (TA certificate) covers electromagnetic compatibility, vibration and environmental (temperature/humidity/IP) performance for the unit as installed per its approved location category; on-board survey typically confirms the unit is installed within its approved environmental category rather than re-testing the hardware.
