Common issues

• Moisture pickup in the flux/coating of low-hydrogen consumables, risking hydrogen-induced cracking if not redried per manufacturer instructions
• Porosity from a damaged consumable package or contaminated base material
• Incorrect consumable selection for the base material or the qualified welding procedure
• Unstable arc or arc blow when used outside the consumable's approved parameter range
• Using a consumable without a matching batch/certificate against the WPS or WPQR

Inspection checklist

• Verify batch/cast number and certificate match the WPS/WPQR requirement before use
• Check packaging integrity and expiry/re-test date on receipt
• Confirm correct storage (heated, dry cabinet) prior to issue for low-hydrogen types
• Check diameter and classification match the approved welding procedure
• Visual check for damage, rust, or coating deterioration before use
• Confirm redrying/holding oven records for basic-coated electrodes

Service intervals

Critical spares

• Correctly rated redrying/holding oven or heated quiver for site use
• Matching diameter/classification stock for the qualified welding procedure
• Current batch test certificates retained with the stock

Safety

• Fume exposure during welding - ensure extraction/ventilation per the consumable's safety data sheet
• Fire risk from redrying ovens if not thermostatically controlled
• Using an unqualified or expired consumable on class-relevant structural or pressure-boundary work is a structural integrity risk, not just a quality issue

Class survey

Welding consumables used on class-relevant structural or pressure-boundary repairs must be selected and stored per an approved Welding Procedure Specification, with batch/cast traceability retained for survey. Surveyors may request consumable certificates and storage/redrying records during hull or pressure-system repairs.
