Common issues

• Hydraulic oil leakage past the rotary vane seals, reducing torque and increasing response time
• Rudder carrier bearing wear causing increased rudder play/backlash
• Non-return or relief valve faults causing rudder creep or slow response
• Follow-up system (feedback linkage/transducer) misalignment causing steering angle indication errors

Inspection checklist

• Check hydraulic oil level, condition and for leaks at vane seals and pipework
• Function test both steering gear power units and the changeover
• Verify rudder angle indicator agrees with actual rudder position, helm and local
• Test emergency/local steering control at the steering gear compartment
• Check rudder carrier bearing clearance/play
• Verify non-return and isolating valves operate correctly
• Test steering gear alarms (power failure, low oil level, overload)
• Confirm rudder stock and tiller/quadrant coupling security
• Check response time and rudder angle achieved against the SOLAS requirement
• Inspect vane housing seals at overhaul for wear or scoring

Safety

• Loss of steering is a navigational safety-critical failure - changeover to the secondary power unit/local control must be drilled regularly
• High-pressure hydraulic system - isolate and relieve pressure before opening components
• Rudder movement during maintenance can crush personnel in the steering gear compartment - lock/isolate the rudder before entry
• Overheated hydraulic oil under sustained hard-over operation is a fire and burn risk

Class survey

Steering gear is safety-critical equipment surveyed at annual and renewal surveys, including function and changeover tests, rudder angle indicator agreement, and alarm testing per SOLAS Ch. V. Class typically verifies emergency steering drill records and rudder carrier bearing wear-down measurements at dry-docking.
