- Water or particulate contamination of the hydraulic oil accelerating wear

Inspection checklist
- Hydraulic oil condition, level, and water content check
- Internal leakage test on each power unit during a changeover
- Rudder angle indication check against actual rudder position, local and bridge
- Relief valve set-pressure verification
- Full changeover and emergency/local steering control test
- Coupling bolts and keys at the rudder stock checked for tightness
- Isolating and bypass valve operation and seal-tightness check
- Steering gear alarms (power failure, overload, low oil) function test
- Communication between steering compartment and bridge tested

Keep the unit's type-approval documentation on board.
