SC-71CA / C1
SC-71CA / C1 is a Hyundai Welding Co., Ltd. Gochang Plant gas-shielded flux-cored welding consumable. It is supplied as wire for mechanized or semi-automatic arc welding and is used only within a qualified welding procedure that specifies the correct consumable, shielding gas, polarity and parameters. In shipbuilding and repair, such wire may be used for structural steel fabrication where the WPS and class approval cover the joint and parent material involved. The C1 designation is part of the consumable's classification and approved shielding-gas condition and should not be interpreted independently of the applicable certificate and WPS. The product differs from solid wire and submerged-arc consumables because the flux ingredients are contained within the tubular wire and contribute to arc behavior, slag and weld-metal properties. Batch traceability and storage condition are therefore part of quality control, not merely purchasing information. Mechanical properties, permitted positions and heat-input limits must be taken from the current certificate and welding procedure rather than assumed from the trade name.

Common issues
- Moisture pickup reducing arc stability and causing porosity
- Batch used past its recommended storage life without redrying where applicable
- Shielding gas flow rate or purity not maintained, causing porosity in the weld
- Excessive stick-out/extension reducing deposition quality
- Consumable strength/toughness grade mismatched to the parent plate specification
- Undercut or lack of fusion when parameters drift from the qualified procedure
Inspection checklist
- Confirm the consumable matches the yard's approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)
- Check the DNV Type Approval certificate number (TAW00005CZ) is current and covers the application
- Inspect packaging/spool integrity and batch date code before issue
- Verify shielding gas type, flow rate and purity if this is a gas-shielded consumable
- Review welder qualification record against this consumable class
- Visually inspect a test coupon for porosity, undercut and spatter before production welding
Service intervals
| Stock rotation | first-in-first-out at each goods-inward check, discard stock past its stated shelf life |
| Contact tip / feed liner replacement | typically every few hours of arc time or when arc instability appears |
| Shielding gas flow meter/regulator check | before each welding session |
Critical spares
- Spare spools of the same approved batch and type
- Contact tips and gas nozzle for the feed torch used with this consumable
- Wire feed liner and drive rollers matched to this wire diameter
Safety
- Welding fumes - local exhaust ventilation required
- UV radiation and arc flash from the welding process itself
- Fire/hot work permit required near fuel or paint stores
- Shielding gas cylinders are a pressure hazard and can displace oxygen in confined spaces
Class survey
Class checks that welding consumables used for hull, pressure part or piping repairs carry a valid DNV Type Approval covering the intended steel grade and welding position, and that batch/certificate records are retained in the repair file for traceability.

Service & Maintenance
Control the consumable through the vessel or yard welding-quality system rather than a machinery PMS. Verify product identity, batch traceability, package integrity and storage condition before issue to the welder. Confirm that the approved WPS specifically permits SC-71CA / C1 and that shielding gas, polarity, wire feed and welding parameters are set within that procedure. Exposed wire should be protected from moisture and contamination, and suspect material should be quarantined rather than dried or reused by guesswork. Any storage-life, reconditioning or exposure limit must come from Hyundai Welding documentation and the applicable class approval.
