Common issues

• Incomplete cure from incorrect mixing ratio or application outside the specified temperature range
• Poor adhesion from inadequate surface preparation (contamination, insufficient roughening)
• Shrinkage or cracking when applied in excessive layer thickness beyond the maker's limit
• Reduced shelf life or premature hardening in the container from improper storage
• Use past the expiry date leading to unreliable cure

Inspection checklist

• Check batch/expiry date and storage condition before use
• Verify surface preparation (cleaning, profile) meets the maker's application instructions
• Confirm mixing ratio and pot life are followed per the datasheet
• Visual/tactile check of cured putty for hardness, adhesion and absence of cracking
• For structural repairs, confirm the application was reviewed/accepted by class where required

Critical spares

• Replacement product from current-dated stock (same type)
• Compatible primer, if specified by the product system
• Dedicated mixing tools
• PPE (gloves, eye protection) per the safety data sheet
• Application tools (spatula/trowel) for the product

Safety

• Uncured epoxy components can cause skin/eye irritation and sensitization - use PPE (gloves, eye protection) per the safety data sheet
• Ensure adequate ventilation during mixing and application
• Store away from ignition sources per the safety data sheet

Class survey

Where epoxy putty repairs are used on structural or pressure-retaining items, class approval (product type approval plus, in many cases, prior notification or acceptance of the specific repair) is typically required; repairs should be documented and the product's DNV Type Approval certificate referenced in survey records.
