- Gelcoat crazing or star-cracking from incorrect film thickness or catalyst ratio

- Poor cure from incorrect catalyst percentage or application at low ambient temperature

- UV yellowing of the topcoat over time on exposed surfaces
Inspection checklist
- Visual check for surface crazing, star-cracking, or blistering
- Check color and gloss consistency across original and repaired areas
- Verify cure hardness meets the product's acceptance criteria before further work is applied over a repair
- Tap-test or visual check for delamination at repaired areas
- Check catalyst/hardener batch and shelf-life records used for the repair
- For structural composite repairs, verify laminate thickness/layup at the repair matches the original structural specification

Critical spares
- Matching gelcoat (NORPOL SVG), topcoat (NORPOL SVT), and filler (NORPOL SP) from the same product line for future repairs
- Correct catalyst/hardener grade specified for the product - do not substitute a different type or brand without checking compatibility
- Mold release/prep consumables if used for mold repair work
Safety
- Styrene-based resin systems and peroxide catalysts (commonly MEKP) are flammable, and the catalyst is a strong oxidizer - store separately from resin/gelcoat and never mix in bulk quantities
- Adequate ventilation is required during application due to styrene vapor
- The cure reaction is exothermic - large mixed batches left standing can self-heat and ignite; mix only what can be applied promptly
- Skin and eye protection required per the product safety data sheet
Class survey
For structural FRP repairs, class typically requires a repair procedure/laminate schedule approved in advance (layup, resin type, cure records retained), separate from cosmetic gelcoat/topcoat work which is generally owner's routine maintenance below the survey threshold.
