Common issues
- Moisture pickup in flux or covered electrodes leading to porosity or hydrogen-induced cracking in the completed weld

Inspection checklist
- Confirm the consumable's class society type approval matches the intended base material and the approved WPS
- Check the batch/heat number against the mill or works certificate held onboard
- Check storage conditions - sealed packaging, and redrying/holding oven records if this is a low-hydrogen consumable
- Visual check of packaging integrity and any sign of moisture exposure or physical damage
- Confirm redrying was carried out per the manufacturer's data if the consumable was exposed to atmosphere for longer than the stated limit

- Flux/electrode dust handling - avoid inhalation, use the PPE specified on the safety data sheet
- Compressed gas cylinders, if used with the associated welding process, must be secured and handled per standard gas safety rules
