Common issues
- Product filed under general interior materials, but the actual product is a copper press-fitting piping system used for onboard potable water, heating or low-pressure air lines, not architectural panelling
- Joints pressed with the wrong jaw/profile for the fitting size, leaving an incomplete crimp
- Fittings left unpressed being missed during commissioning - the system's indicator ring/leak feature should reveal this on pressure test, but only if the test is actually carried out
- Pressing tool jaws not recalibrated or serviced per the tool manufacturer's schedule, risking under-pressed joints
- Fittings used outside their approved medium/pressure/temperature range for the vessel's system
- O-ring (sealing element) damage from over-bending the pipe near a fitting during installation
Inspection checklist
- Confirm the fitting size and pressing profile match the tool used during installation
- Check for the manufacturer's unpressed-joint indicator (if fitted) has not been missed at any joint
- Inspect visible joints for correct depth of insertion mark
- Verify the system has been pressure/leak tested and the test is recorded
- Check pipe supports and clips are not inducing stress at nearby joints
- Confirm the system is used only for the medium and pressure/temperature range it is approved for
- Inspect for surface corrosion (dezincification/pitting) on copper pipework in way of dissimilar-metal contact
Service intervals
| System pressure/leak test after any modification | immediately after modification, before returning to service |
| Visual inspection of accessible joints | at each dry-docking or major survey |
| Pressing tool calibration/service | per the tool manufacturer's schedule |
Critical spares
- Matching press fittings (elbows, couplings, tees) of the correct size and sealing element material
- Sealing O-rings compatible with the system's medium (e.g. EPDM for water/heating, confirm exact material for the actual duty)
- Pipe clips and supports matching the original installation
Safety
- An unpressed joint can hold initially and fail later under pressure or vibration - never skip the post-installation pressure test
- Do not use this system outside its approved pressure/temperature/medium range without manufacturer confirmation
- Verify dissimilar-metal isolation where copper pipework contacts steel structure or fittings to avoid galvanic corrosion
Class survey
This item is listed under 'General Interior Materials' but is a copper press-fitting piping system - surveys of it belong with the relevant piping system (potable water, heating, or low-pressure air) rather than interior/construction materials. Confirm the actual system it serves against the ship's piping diagrams before scoping any survey item.
