Inspection checklist

  • Thermal check (by hand-held thermometer or thermal imaging where available) at terminations and lugs
  • Insulation resistance test on the run, logged and trended over time
  • Check termination and lug tightness/torque at switchboards and junction boxes
  • Visual inspection of the cable route for chafe, crushing, or exposed conductor
  • Check cable support spacing has not sagged or allowed chafe against structure
  • Confirm cable identification/tagging is legible and matches the single-line/cable schedule
  • Check earthing continuity of screen/armour where fitted

Service intervals

Insulation resistance test annually, per the vessel's planned maintenance system
Thermal check of terminations annually, or sooner on heavily loaded circuits
Visual route inspection annually
Termination torque check at major overhaul or when a termination is disturbed for any reason

Critical spares

  • Spare cable length of the correct rating and fire/halogen performance
  • Cable lugs and terminations matching conductor size
  • Heat-shrink termination and jointing kits

Safety

  • Confined cable routes through trunking where access for inspection is limited
